Shawn Allen Eades Remembered By www.hamiltonnews.com
West Mountain schoolyard memorial for Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan
By Mark Newman, News Staff
He will always be remembered by family and friends.
And now anyone who visits Westwood elementary school will know his name.
A memorial dedicated to the memory and sacrifice of Sergeant Shawn Allen Eades was unveiled last Friday on the front lawn of the west Mountain school that Eades attended from kindergarten to Grade 5 in the ‘80s.
The Hamilton-born Eades was one of three Canadian soldiers killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan on Aug. 20, 2008.
Eades, 33, was a combat engineer with 12 Field Squadron, 1 Combat Engineer Regiment from Edmonton and attached to the Second Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry
About 200 people, including family, friends, military officials, Westwood students and others were on hand for the special dedication ceremony in the school gymnasium.
A tearful Bev McGraw, Shawn’s mother, thanked everyone for attending the event and then turned her attention to the fallen soldier’s wife Lisa and his daughters, 10-year-old Breanna and seven-year-old Niya, who were seated a few steps away.
“Girls will always have an angel on your shoulder and he’ll always be watching over you,” McGraw said.
Chris Ecklund, local businessman and founder of the Canadian Heroes website, told the gathering that the family missed their WestJet connecting flight from Winnipeg to Hamilton and when the captain of the jet learned what had happened he turned the aircraft around and went back to Winnipeg to get them.
Ecklund said the other passengers on the jet applauded when the family boarded the aircraft.

Schoolyard Memorial for Fallen Soldier By www.thespec.com
Fallen Hamilton soldier Shawn Allen Eades’ wife and two young daughters missed the connecting flight that would get them to his memorial ceremony last week.
The family lives in Edmonton and had to catch a plane from Winnipeg that would fly them to Hamilton. With just half an hour to get in and out of the airport, the plane left without them. Lisa pleaded with airport authorities, and after hearing her story, the pilot turned the plane around and came back for them. The people already on board clapped as Lisa and her daughters Breanna, 10, and Niya, 7, were seated.
They were joined by family and friends, soldiers, teachers, students and politicians as close to 200 people at Westwood Public School remembered the fallen soldier Friday afternoon.
Eades was killed on Aug. 20, 2008, while on duty in Afghanistan. He was two weeks away from coming home after his third rotation.
“I think that it helps educate the newer generation of children that war is not just in the past,” said Lisa. “It’s not just about WWI and WWII, wars are continuing on in our day and age now and they are not being as recognized as they need to be.”
The ceremony took place in the school gymnasium at Westwood where Shawn was a student from grades 3-6 in the ’80s. Students sat patiently as they waited to stand up and sing Canadian Heroes.
“He was really special to Canada, and if we didn’t have these soldiers we would have had a really bad life,” said Hassan Skaik, 10.
“It’s not really a happy ceremony, it’s a sad ceremony,” said Victoria Dixon, 9. “It’s not really happy to have a father or son or husband die.”
Chris Ecklund, philanthropist and creator of Canadian Heroes memorial website, worked closely with Eades’ mother Bev McCraw on the memorial. He said he’s been to too many repatriation ceremonies and hopefully there won’t be any more.
“We went to Afghanistan to fight for our freedoms, and unfortunately 157 of our soldiers gave the ultimate sacrifice,” said Ecklund. “The kids are going to go away from this — they are going to know who Shawn Eades was.”
McCraw gave a touching tribute to her son as she told the crowd the pride and joy of Shawn’s life were his daughters. She looked at Breanna and Niya when she told them, “You will always have an angel on your shoulders.”
The ceremony continued on outside into the wet drizzle where the Eades family was escorted out to the tune of bagpipes. The memorial was draped in a Canadian flag while surrounded by red mums and red lanterns. After the stone was unveiled in the Westwood schoolyard, Breanna and Niya lit the lanterns as the rest of the family laid red roses in front of it.
“It was about daddy — I want people to know that people who die in the war should always be remembered,” said Breanna.
“He was a special soldier,” added Niya.

Afghan war vets need recognition
Hamilton should honour its dead soldiers from Afghanistan by inscribing their names on all area cenotaphs, says a local businessman.
Chris Ecklund, who created and continues to fund the Canadian Heroes memorial website and Facebook pages for Canada’s Afghan war veterans, said the soldiers who gave their lives in Afghanistan should be honoured by putting their names on local cenotaphs, especially the one at Gore Park.
Ecklund said he would pay the cost to engrave the names of Hamilton’s three soldiers — including Sergeant Shawn Eades and Private Mark Anthony Graham — on the cenotaphs in time for this year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies.
Ecklund said he doesn’t want Canada’s Afghan war veterans forgotten — something that happened to Canada’s Korea veterans after the conflict ended in 1953.
Hamilton Mountain Councillor Terry Whitehead applauds Ecklund’s idea. But he said it should be reviewed by the city’s veterans subcommittee.
Other Ontario municipalities have added names of Canadians who served in Afghanistan after being asked by family members and local Canadian Legions.
Municipalities in the past have balked because Canadian soldiers were still participating in military operations. But in July, the Canadian government declared the mission complete.
Ecklund plans on sending a letter to council requesting the city engrave the names of Hamilton’s soldiers who served in Afghanistan into the cenotaph at Gore Park.

The Building Of The Canadian Heroes Race Team
It is 9 months before the drop of the green flag for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series for 2012.
From now till that moment we have an incredible amount of work to do.
First and Foremost is arranging sponsors to back the Canadian Heroes Race Team.
I am setting timelines on what needs to be done by what time in order for us to compete.
I will share with you along the way how it all goes, it will be a long journey, the building of a NASCAR race team is a very complex undertaking, many things need to happen some all at the same time others in an order.
Some of you may find the race car itself an interesting project to follow, this in itself is beyond what 99% of people will ever experience in their lifetimes, most of us just put the key in turn the engine on and go on our merry way.
I want to do something different, I want to share with you everything that we do along the way, so you can have a 1st hand understanding of how a race car is built from the ground up.
One project that I am going to try to do over the winter is to update to the new NASCAR Spec motor from the BUILT motor that the car has now.
This and a lot of different chassis set ups for the various tracks, will give you a never before behind the scenes tour of how it all works together.
It will be a wild and wonderful ride, strap your self in tighten up your belts and lets go racing!!!!
