Golf Tournament Fundraiser To Honour Fallen Soldier

Hamilton , March 28th 2012 - Canadian Heroes announced today it will hold its second annual Charity Golf Tournament to help honour Soldiers who have lost their lives in Afghanistan. Chris Ecklund, founder of the organization, says he is delighted that Astral Media is once again partnering with Canadian Heroes to help sponsor the event.

Chris Ecklund of Canadian Heroes wants to “thank Astral for once again joining forces with Canadian Heroes to help raise funds for such a truly wonderful cause.” Peter Hobbs, General Sales Manager Astral Radio Hamilton, echoes this sentiment, saying “Astral Hamilton Radio is thrilled to partner with Canadian Heroes for this event for the second year in a row. We were deeply touched by the response of participants and the community last year – especially during the unveiling of the memorial to Sgt. Shawn Eades - and look forward to a bigger and better event this year.”

The tournament will help raise funds to aide in the construction of a memorial park in Orangeville, Ontario for fallen Soldier Cpl. Matthew McCully. Cpl. McCully’s mother, Valerie McGrady is spearheading the fundraising to build the Park, and we are proud to be able to contribute all of the funds raised at this Golf Tournament to the cause. Cpl. McCully was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) during Operation Hoover. Cpl McCully was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Cpl. McCully was a signals operator with the 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Headquarters and Signals Squadron. He was born and raised in Orangeville, and was based at CFB Petawawa. He was only 25 years old on May 25th, 2007; the day that he passed away.

Chris Ecklund said, “It is important that fallen soldiers such as Cpl. McCully be remembered, and we can pay them this respect by building a Memorial in their honour.”
The tournament will be held at the Knollwood Golf Course (1276 Shaver Rd.) in Ancaster on Monday, June 18. Ticket price is $150 per golfer or $500 for a 4-some. For people who do not wish to golf, dinner tickets are available for $50.00.

Vimy Ridge

I hope everyone had a great Easter weekend with friends and family.

Today April 9, we like to remember the Canadians that fought in the battle of Vimy Ridge during World War I.

The Canadians who victoriously fought in the battle of Vimy Ridge in northern France during World War I, which was part of the larger battle of Arras in northern France, began on Easter Monday, April 9, in 1917.

About 30,000 Canadians fought this brave fight and became victorious. Canadians suffered about 11,000 casualties, of these 3,600 were killed.

The Canadian National Vimy Memorial sits on a hill granted to Canada in northern France. The monument is inscribed with the names of 11,285 Canadian soldiers who were listed as missing or presumed dead in France. It stands as a tribute to all who served their country in battle and risked or gave their lives in the war.

Today we Remember those brave men and women of Vimy Ridge…
